Right, went up to a model fair today, and found a Bowman 234 loco, boxed, with boxed tender. Has burner etc, in original condition with burn marks up the side. Pistons are loose in the cylinders and have got packing gland soaked in oil wrapped around them. It is complete, just the cylinders and burn marks. He wants £200 for both, in good boxes. Please let me know before 2pm if it is any good or not as I need to go back if it is.

Thanks, James

Thats about what they go for on ebay James.
The price is probably fair to good.
Have a look at this one on ebay same as you described, it is at 160 pounds and still has 9 hours to go so will surely pass the 200 mark.

It's in better condition than that. Would you buy it then?

If you have 200 pounds to spare get it.
The two Bowmans I bought my max bid was 160 pounds but they need a lot of work.

Its less than a new Mamod loco over 70 years old and will go up in value while a Mamod will go up it wont go up as much as a Bowman.
Just remember if its too pretty you may never want to fire it.
Also if you need any parts repro parts are available for just about everything on a Bowman loco.

James, I think it's a good price. Compare it with a boxed 234 from Mike Cooke at £195, and a boxed tender at £115. If the pistons are very loose you may want oversize ones making, but they are supposed to have felt pads behind them for lubrication which seals things up as well.

I'd say go for it, maybe try to haggle down to £175, but if he won't budge I'd say £200's fair.

I got him down £20, he won't go anymore. I can't affordf it but is it too good to miss? I have the money in the bank, but don't really want to spend it.

At 180 its nothing to make a profit on but it'll be a nice piece and an investment Better on that than a Wilesco which is a sure loss!

Your choice Jimbo! If you decide not, at least you have a mamod loco

You could maybe get one like that on ebay for 180 pounds but it would take you a while and you would need luck.

If it was me I would but then I'm a loco man.
I'm going to bid on the 300 tonight before I go to bed but dont tell my wife.

£200 is about right for loco + tender in good condition. The pistons have an oil groove in them and some people put packing in there even if it's not necessary. Burn marks are normal. I'd go for it if it's what you want.

If you buy them and don't like them, there's a fair chance you can shift them with a bit of profit at STIA.

If I hadn't blown all my Christmas money I would get you to buy it for me but the wife would kill me if I spent the money for our new airconditioning on a toy loco.
