Getting there, done a few test laps of the portable layout!

Unfortunately the garage floor is more uneven than I thought - it is not possible to just let the loco run - too many gradients and unless you are constantly adjusting the throttle it will hurtle down one side at scary speed and then stall on the other side. I will just Have to get the RC sorted so I am not panic chasing it all the time!!

Still a few minor glitches outstanding, but at least on Sunday there will be a working loco and a working Layout!!

Tonights Agenda:

1. Fix steam leaks - worst ones are from between reversing block and frames - I usually make my own thin gaskets from paper to use here - standard mamod practice seems to be to just rely on the paint - but I must have cocked up slightly here because it runs around as if I left the drain cocks open!

2. Fix pressure gauge - it was working on the last test but the joint was leaking. Fixed leak, but now pressure gauge doesn't work! So need to establish if in curing the leak I managed to block the pipe!

3. Add the Radio control - I will have a look to see if I can attach the servo for the whistle under the roof as it will be a little less obtrusive - it was previously on the footplate.

4. Test run again

You have a lot to get through but you're much further forward than I am.

On the chassis does it matter a lot if the holes don't line up exactly to the reversing block holes?

Progress a little slow, I have fixed the pressure gauge and now found the culprit of the leaks from the front - I had forgotten to re-tighten the bolt which holds the front valve on!

It was left loose to make the fitting of the steam pipes easier which are pushed into O rings that this bolt also compresses via a washer. Result was that there was far too little tension in the spring, so that the valve was lifting off the face with the pressure and leaking!

It is now much better, but alas not perfect - it is leak free in reverse, but still leaks a bit in forwards. This results in reduced performance running forwards, but in reverse performance is back to its old self - able to just about spin the wheels on completely dry oil free track.

It seems that I must have disturbed the valve a bit in the rebuild - it did not leak before so I did not think it needed attention. Idealy I should remove the valve and lap it in properly, but I have not time for that! With luck it will bed itself in a bit with use and the leaking will reduce also, time will tell!

Don't worry - Titan is officially an operational Loco.

The only outstanding issues at the moment are:

1. Refit Radio Control
2. Mend dynamo - I also want to make a new headlamp as well with an ultrabright LED - I don't think they were easily available, and certainly not in white when I first built it. but if I do not have time I could just fit it up with the existing yellow LED lamp.
3. Fix nameplates and builders plates + general tidy up and polish.

I have booked tomorrow off work, so I should have enough time to do it all + sort some of the little niggles on the Layout.
