Just got back from a cracking weekend at the Welland Steam Rally. Hopefully the pictures are different to those shown by Mr Mamod.























This morning (Sunday) I was talking to an owner of a Aveling Roller who was cleaning the boiler tubes with a long handle brush. He said he should have done them yesterday morning but took the lazey option and waited until the fire was well lit then chucked an aerosol can in the fire box and shut the door promptly. He said the resulting explosion was enough to clean the boiler tubes out!

The more common (and safer) trick is to throw in a few handfulls of sand while the engine is working hard.

Tube cleaning is one of those boring, hard work, but, nonetheless, essential tasks. Depending on the quality of the coal, you might get away with missing it once in a while but it should be done every day before lighting the fire.
