Hi Guys

This is my first ever engine and plan to restore it. I have never owned one before but have always been a keen steamer. I am slowly working my way up to a 1" traction one day, I hope

Ok I dont know alot about this Engine all I know she is a Mamod SR1 I think and what I was wondering is:

1) What size rivets do I need?
2) What is the best way to remove the paint from the wheels, and boiler without causing damage?
3) Whats the best way to polish up the tyres so to speak?

I hope that you guys can help, and welcome me in to you community.

Thanks
Ryan

A big welcome to the forum, from Down Under,  Thumbs up!  Thumbs up!

1. The rivets you need can be sourced from here, there are two types, depending on how much you need to undo,

http://manormodels.co.uk/spares-Rivets.asp

2. there are aumber of ways to remove the paint, one favoured by some Uk members is Nitromors.

3. It very hard to keep a constant shine on the tyre part of the wheels, as they oxidize very quickly. I sometimes use a felt tipped pad, on a Dremmel type machine, with Autosol polish.

BTW, it looks Ok as it is, do you really need to strip & repaint it

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris

Thanks for that, The only reason I want to repaint is that is very un even also the riverts are very sharp so I thought I would rerivet and tidy up the paint a bit, also I want to add some little mods like a number plate and lanterns on the front and back.

Do you know if there is anywhere to get the number plates or is it something I would have to just make myself?

Thanks Ryan

A big welcome to the friendliest forum around, Ryan.

It's great to have you here.

Sound advice from Chris there. Why not just give it a good clean up and see how she looks then?

Owning these little machines can be addictive, but don't worry about it, we're all steam addicts here.

Please don't be afraid to ask questions as every one of us started the same way.

Hope to be talking steam with you for a long time to come.

Ah, Ok re the paint, give it a few steam ups first, you may get to like the way it looks, it'll save a lot of work,     . BTW, be very careful of the Nitromors, if you use it, you'll need to get kitted out properly, gloves, safety glasses etc.

There was a member, making small etched brass signs, for the side of rollers etc, but don't know if he's still doing it. Maybe someone else will know.

Cheers

Chris

Welcome Ryan from Indiana, USA.  A Mamod roller is a fine project to hone your skills.

Chris's inputs are spot on.  Another more gentle way to remove paint is to boil parts in water containing dish soap (fairy liquid I think you call it)...seems to do the job with much less smell than the chemical products like Nitromors.
