Pete's thread on the origins of steam toys reminded me that while on honeymoon in Cornwall earlier this year I took a few pictures of the Murdoch Flyer.  This is a replica of the first ever steam "locomotive".  It was designed and built by William Murdoch.  No plans for the original engine survived but it is based on a model of the same engine produced in 1784.  Legend has it that Mr Murdoch rode the engine from "mine to mine" to demonstrate his abilities although this is widely believed to be an exaggeration.  It probably never went very far mostly because it looks quite fragile and the roads at the time were not great.

This engine is actually located in a small indoor market in Redruth and is steamed up a few times a year.

As you say the reports of its travel are possibly an exageration. On the other hand having seen it in steam it does move quite well.

Fantastic engine, at first glance i thought it was a small model but on looking closer and after i read you text i noticed it was the real thing. Beautiful is an understatement.

Thanks for sharing those photos Dave, if anyone owns a copy of Basil Harley's Toyshop Steam on page 9 there is a photo of the actual model that Murdoch made.

As you say it does go very well.  I've found a video of the replica running round a car park on the Murdoch Flyer website.  The replica doesn't seem to have a water feed tank although the website says they also have a support wagon so I would have thought this would carry additional water and coal.
