I am embarrassed it has been so long for me to get any boat work done in the shop.

In the first place the shop itself has under gone a major "over haul" in the lat 3 months. I sold my Taig Mill and Atlas lathe and down sized to a Unimat 3 lathe and mill.  -

I cleaned and reorganized the shop over the holidays and sat down the last couple of days and got to work getting the side-wheel paddle tug that Mooseman mailed to me last spring.

It had been a steamer i n the past and also run eclectically- she came to me empty

Here is how she looked then

Here she is at Moose's house  with her super structure off to show you the space she has for the power plant ( a Cheddar Puffin twin and boiler)

This tug is 48" long and 17" across her sponsons( the wheel housings)

In my shop here is every thing in place ( except a water tank and a condenser). You can see the disposable fuel canister in the bow- it holds a 280 gm canister.

I have a small water pump placed between the engine and the boiler for boiler top up- it will be manually operated for now- but I have plans for one that runs off the engine.

Here is a quick closer up of the engine. It will have a chain and cog drive ( that is why it is mounted transversely )  that will connect to the paddle wheel shaft.

This boiler is as strong a steam producer as I have ever owned- the engine is also strong running-

There is some superstructure work to do on the tug but getting the power plant installed and adapted is first priority. I do need to adapt a maccsteam burner to the boiler ( an ugrade from the blow torch style it came with- If you have been following Moosemans re-build of the Festina Lente- you will know what I am referring to

Mostly I will end with ..... it sure is nice to get our of the "dry spell" in my shop...and get back to some sort of pace again!!

Hurray ( No the Cushing and Dispatch have not been forgotten, they are alive and well  and are receiving some small amounts of love also

Hmm, an eclectic motor...is that anything like Infinite Improbability Drive?!

Seriously, that is a lovely paddle tug, reminds me of 'Reliance' at the Greenwich Maritime Museum in Blighty.

Regards,

John.

O captain my captain! Great to see you back at the helm!

I know that that is going to be a stunner. What I'm particularly interested in is how you will be transferring power from the engine.....that looks like a fast runner, I assume you will gear ger down?

Keep up the good work!

That is most certainly a stunner of a paddle steamer you have going there. I'm sure it will be a star of the fleet!

Glad to have helped clear the way a little.

You know, whenever I see a model of a side paddle wheel vessel, I get this mental image of a hamster wheel in the center as the motive force. It would be a simple R/C set up too, as you only need to have two incentive devices fore and aft of the cage wheel to present or withdraw a bit of apple or the like. I suppose a double set-up of the same type would allow for individual paddle control and pivot maneuvering as well!

Disclaimer and Addendum:

The foregoing was for the purpose of humor only please ... I do not advocate the use of cute furry little creatures for the purpose of galley slaves in this enlightened age ... though there are more than enough politicians that I would recommend for such duty, but only if the vessel were sure to sink! Come to think of it, the Ship of State does seem to be rather in a sinking condition these days!!!

Back on topic:

I truly look forward to that craft taking to it's natural element and plying the waters under the command of the Admiral. Perhaps earning it's keep towing sailing vessels (Clippers, Down Easters and Lumber Schooners) over the dreaded Columbia River Bar.

Darned "word suggestion" programs...but it worked out funny

In my mind I saw a boat sitting waiting at the dock for what ever motor showed up!!

no reason to be embarassed, we're not going anywhere. A thing I love about this hobby is that I have projects that will keep me up when all the girls have gone to bed.

Or watch an old Spaghetti western......

I had to watch the opening to "Once upon a time in the West" again the other night....good stuff

I have thought about you a lot as I am currently out here in the deep west right now - Just crossed near Yellowstone National park today... and then drove through the old Battle ground site  at Little Big Horn today ( Custer's Last Stand) on my way to Casper Wyoming......

Crossed the best named creek I have seen a while also--"North Fork Crazy Woman"

A good story goes with the name too

http://www.legendsofamerica.com/na-crazywomansfork.html

Then I stopped and took a few pictures ( tried out a few of the effects modes on my Android phone camera

Check them out:

And down the rabbit hole....

Ok - back to steam

Cheers
