I'd be very surprised if they actually are still MIB. Serious rusting and even electrolysis is more likely, but I'll certainly hope for the best. Likely, what does come out of the ground will be in good enough condition to be worth rebuilding, and thus it truly is a great treasure! _________________ Are we having fun yet?

I hope they are restore-able as we need to preserve all the history we can and the spit fire played a big part in WWII. You here any more PLEASE keep us posted. _________________ Jeff Member of the Georgia Steamers Association.

| An airworthy version would probably fetch one million pounds sterling plus at auction.I believe there are about 40 airworthy examples worldwide. |

They couldn't be any worse off than the "Glacier Girl"... http://www.p38assn.org/glacier-girl.htm _________________ Presume not upon God’s patience.

I thought I was onto something like that once, what with my house being built before WW2, that was until I realised all the bits were parts of an old Transit Van..... _________________ When you nod your head.....I'll hit it............ |

I remember many years ago scraping 20 griffin cylinder blocks and heads all had been fully overalled and moth bold sometime in the fifties by the RAF (along with a post war Austin16) they broke for a £1000 then. I don't like to think what one would be worth now

Hopefully the remnants will be unearthed and maybe there will end up a few more Spitfires in the skies.
We have a wonderful guy not far from us whos called Tony Ditheridge and his Company "Hawker Restorations" (Google them)
can make a Hurricane from very little of the original....all you need is a lottery win and not be in a hurry for the plane.
The Grace 2 Seater spitfire flies out of the old Bentwaters airfield in Suffolk, it makes all the hairs on your next stand up when that flies overhead.

...made my day mate, thanks for sharing.
my Father in Law worked on the spits in Malta - his job was to get em back in the air after they'd been shot at. Mostly overnight.
The british pilots came in after the day's sorties, went off to the mess or somewhere and it was the wife's dad's job to get them patched up ready for the next morning's runs. ...he was never bored apparently ! _________________ Cheers,

Very interesting indeed although it may dent the second-hand Spitfire market. I remember as a kid playing in Seafires on their way to the scrap heap, parked at Abbotsinch Naval Air Station (now Glasgow Airport). They had four-bladed props, I think and were probably Griffin-powered.
It was pretty easy to wander in and out of there in those days. Nobody seemed to mind. I even managed to 'rescue' the tail wheel of an Avenger (a wrecked one used for fire fighting practice). |

As a ridiculous Spitfire and Aviation enthusiast, not to mention pilot and aviation student. I am almost tearing up, i am that excited! If they are all crated with Griffon engines and made airworthy they will easily fetch 1.2million GBP each. If the man who discovered them is allowed to keep them his $200,000 investment will be chumps change!
I would literally give anything to fly one let alone own one. _________________ Do a barrel roll. |
