Hi all, won this small Doll steam engine recently. I will update this thread as I go. This should be a great first steam project.
The engine runs, but isn't getting up too sufficient pressure (due too some boiler leaks). Despite this the engine still managed too run well although a bit slow.
I think this model may have had a sight glass in the past, it looks as if there was a problem with it, so they removed it and just placed a water plug there instead. Maybe someone on the forum has one similar too this, any info is greatly appreciated.
Firebox is a bit rusty, which I shall tend too sort shortly. The burner looks homemade as does the funnel, which does not fit.
Nevertheless it's a nice engine.
Anyhow I'm still very happy with it, Pictures below after a light clean
I am sure that when you remove that horrible scab from the end of the boiler you will find the sight glass holes.
I have a Bing that had a similar modification.
As I see it, it's impossible to effect any repair and maintain the patina.
Once the end is removed you have to descale it then heat it and remove the repair.
Then I heated it repeatedly and wiped the excess solder away with a cloth and then fine steel wool.
After reassembly you may be able to buff away any residual solder.
It took me days.
I had several unkind words for the person who made the initial repair. _________________ Stitch

It's all you can do.
It's not like you can go to "End Caps-R-Us" for a new one.

we are not End caps-R-Us but the Elves can make most things
if pressed into service .
The first thing to do is find out has the boiler got a level plug or sight glass.

When I "picked the scab", (that's just gross), on my boiler I found the sight glass holes.
I plan to remove all the old solder and install new backing plates for the attachment screws.
My plan is a circular plate just short of the inside diameter of the boiler.
I see it as far easier then attaching and holding the small backer plates in place when reattaching the end cap.
I am thinking I'll assemble the entire sight glass prior to trying to fit and solder the end cap.
Then I can remove it and buff the boiler.
Sound workable?
If that fails I have a large hammer and a trash can under my work bench,,,,,,,
Then again,,, there is always eBay and letting someone else have a shot at it.
Of course I am joking.

I think it's a nice looking steam plant, Abdul. Won't take a lot of work to fix it up, but there is a bit to do on it.
I would find out how the boiler is supposed to look regarding that end cap, and do it up the way it was.
No need to try and preserve the tarnish on it. Polish it up and a new end cap will look right at home.
The engine itself looks to be in very good shape. It'll be great! _________________ Filled with a vacuum...

Well guys, the plate on the end cap fell off, so I gave both parts a clean, it certainly had a sight glass.
Not sure if the base paint is original, but it looks alright and hasn't come off anywhere. I might repaint it, however undecided as yet.
