Yeah mate, you could try a dog clutch that allows it to come down the hill under it's own weight.
The crane Dad built uses a simple thing of sliding axles with a cog on them to engage the crane. Slide that one out, and the other in, reverses it if you kinda get the picture.
Problem with the dog clutch like I built, is that it's under tension when engaged, and reduces power.

Hopefully I get my meccano Monday week. Can start fooling around with it then.
Planning on making a few workshop tools to start with, like a lathe drill press and so on. Then maybe a steam wagon with a MM1/2.
