I always empty while it`s hot.
A good shaking & spinning while most of the water evaporates.
When it`s cooled I give it a shot of WD40 inside the boiler, engine and all over the outside too. The screw in bits are then stored in a zippy plastic bag with the engine & burner.

Works for Me!

I really wouldn't recommend that unless you plan to thoroughly clean the inside of the engine with a solvent before use.

WD40 is horrendous stuff when it is heated; it turns into a black tar-like material that will quickly block small steam pipes or create a sticky piston

Hmmm. Yes I`ve heard that.

But after 50+yrs of steaming, and 45yrs of using WD40 or Duck Oil etc. it`s never happened to me.

Guess I need more practice!

I certainly can't remember WD40 in this country 45 years ago!
Even if it was here then, and I really don't think it was, I'm quite sure it wouldn't be the same product that is sold today.

It had its 50th anniversary in 2002, Ive got the limited edition can

Perhaps you do have a promotional can, but it was only sold in San Diego in 1953, and it was called Rocket 44, and it wasn't sold as retail in San Diego until 1958

Don't believe all the promotional hype they use today just to flog a can!

That's an interesting read. I remember the cans from the 70's had a picture of a Rocket printed on the side of them, now I know why.

I bought my first can of "WD40 Rocket" from Bernard`s cafe in Ingleton, in the Yorkshire Dales, August 1959.

A local Lass had told us how good it was for waterproofing car & tractor electrics during Yorkshire winters.

I was on a camping / climbing / caving holiday with a pal at the time, and it was August in the year before we both left school, so I can date it precisely.
HAPPY DAYS!

I usually carry 1 in the car and keep 2 in my workshop for any tool / machinery protection.

I just do my best to get all the water out whilst engine is still hot.

Then leave S/V, whistle, and overflow plug out.

If I am decomissioning an engine for display I tilt it up so any water gets to one end, then feed a small piece of string, so it sits in the water.
It acts like a wick, and draws the water out.

Wallace, this is a great idea
I will have to give it go.
