My third live steam loco is this I.P. Jane.
This was won on ebay about 3 years ago. On receipt I found the bodywork had been mis-fitted at the rear of the smokebox. After oiling up, etc the first steaming failed to get the wheels to move. After removing the cylinders, refitting and more oiling around I finally got the wheels to turn. Several runs later on my rolling road, and this loco now runs with excellent regulator control.
The only part of this loco that is the same as the Mamod loco is the smokebox casting, the rest is all very much better. It is fitted with centre buffer couplings which are not quite compatible with my mainly Mamod rolling stock, so I may change these for Multi-height couplings instead.

| PPS make it now called 'Janet' www.pps-steam-models.co.uk/pps.htm ! I like it, but to be honest at the price they retail at when you get the gas burner, I'd rather a 'Edrig'. |

I came very close to buying a Janet, and to be honest after seeing them and handling them I am still tempted. Very solid bits of kit. But as you say they are expensive for what you get compared to an Edrig.
I would say thought that if you start with an ebay Mamod and add on all the upgrades to get close to a Janet spec then financially you might as well just buy a Janet. _________________ Chris

Start at £305, go up to nearly £390 (with spoked wheels, pressure gauge, gas burner).
But then if you consider that as standard they come with the upgraded boiler at £100, upgraded pistons £40, upgraded reverser £20, upgraded wheels £25, upgraded safety valve £8, water top up £6, regulator £23, meths burner £24 (so we are up to £250 ish of upgrades just counting the ones I can think of)....
Of course, you don't need all those upgrades on a Mamod loco, but then if you did want them all, and didn't want to do the work then financially speaking you should just buy a Janet.
Also in my opinion they look very nice, and the bodywork looks very well put together. They also weigh far more than a Mamod loco.
If I saw one second hand I would certainly bid on it. _________________ Chris

Bit too much for me unfortunatly would take a very long time for me to save up.
I've still not even seen one in action _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

Roly has made one from meccano, do a site search and you should find it.
I had an idea to make one using conveyor belt rollers, but it hasn't been a priority so haven't bothered. _________________ Chris

It's not homemade, it is made by John Prescott engineering:

As MTA has correctly pointed out my rolling road is made by John Prescott Engineering.
Whilst not cheap I have found this very useful in getting my locos to run correctly, as running on blocks puts no load on the wheels, and if I can get a loco to run freely on the rolling road, then it should work well on my loop of Mamod track.
