welcome from London Lozza. what was it about this Renown that promted your first steam purchase?

er um it was shiny?

Nah I'm a farm-boy and ex-earthmoving operator. so I have an empathy (if that is the right word) for machinery. I liked the simplicity of the Renown. It has a real solid honesty about it.

I also liked the idea that I could play with a machine that I wasn't dependent on. If there is a problem with it, I can take my time nutting out a solution. I don't have to hurry because I need it to get me some-where or do something for me.

It is also a fascinating window into history. The use of chemistry, structure and physics that paved the way to the industrial revolution and hurlled us into an ever more complex world.

It may also be a window into our future. We have used machines like this to harness simple energy into a pulse and convert that pulse into a useable momentum. When looking at such a simple machine it is easy to believe we may yet be able to use natural pulses, such as the waves or the tides, to do much of the work we have delegated to coal and oil.

I think it was Aristotle who said that- to think, man needs lesure. Tinkering is a great way to employ the fingers while the mind roams.

Lots of reasons, including "It was there" and polished brass is real shiny

Cheers
Larry

Hi Larry,

A warm welcome from Richard and Andrew in the US Virgin Islands.

Love your explanation of what prompted you to buy the Renown.

Eloquent, insightful and pertinent.
