hello to you all, and thank you for letting me join this wonderful sight.
My name's Chris, and i'm from Boston in Lincolnshire.

I gained the steam bug off my old man at a young age. he worked for a local engineering firm who owned and restored a collection of traction engines and steam wagons, so spent much of my childhood at steam rallies sat in the coal bunker waving to the crowds.

currently i own two mamods, an sr1a in original condition but someday i intend to customize and an se1 (i think)of dubious origins, condition and age.

between steam ups I do a lot of work with the Scouts. I hope one day when i find/draw an appropriate design to do an engine build project with them. that's if the health and safety bods don't get in the way

anyway i always like to come in with a little piece of advice you might like to try, so here goes. An old scouter friend of mine suggested  to me that when using the old tranja meths stoves you should dilute you're fuel ten parts meths to one part water, this helps stop you sooting up your pans so much. well i tried this with my mamods and success! not only does it reduce sooting but it cools the flame down just enough to get slow running.

hope this helps.

Hi, Chris,
the steam hobby is very addictive but you´ve mentioned the steam bug hits you in the youth. Whenever the steam bug hits you doesn´t matter although it matters that it hits you atfall. So welcome to the forum from a steam addict from Germany.

cheers  Joe

PS: There´s no better addiction than steam !

The best is to use Meths pure. The flame will work fine . You have to be careful with it but if you go out camping with the kids you will know that. One of my engines is called "  The Camping engine " as the heatsource is an old PRIMUS camping stove for a two litre boiler and this uses a lot of time to gain working pressure, so I wouldn´t make any meths mixture to calm the flame. The best results of a sootfree burning is pure meths of the highest grade available: Here  in Germany it is 96% but there are 4% of a substance which  makes the alcohol bitter to avoid that someone drinks it.

cheers Joe

wow! that engine sounds a beast is this the kind of stove you're talking about ?

because if so have one that runs on paraffin. it will work on meths but hardly produces any heat.
this is a tranja,

A friend of mine swears by his Trangia stove, i do have one of the Trangia fuel bottles as it is perfect for storing meths.

I've seen the Paraffin/Kerosene stoves before, i believe you use meths to get it going to start with. Both of those stoves are perfect fo cold weather where the gas ones won't work.
