Ok, here's one for the Mamod experts...below is my first ever Mamod ..all the way from a market in Bangkok. Now it was sold as an SE1A, but looking through the TSB I figure its more like an SE1 from cicra 1965.

The only difference I can see is that there was some kind of sticker higher up on the side of the firebox than that depicted on TSB entry #433.

Anyone confirm that this is indeed an SE1 from around 1965 ??


 



BTW..will be repainting the firebox and will give the boiler et al a gentle clean

Hi mate

Yep you got it right, about 1965 (no later) as that date is the upper end of that type of decal and the nut and bolt construction

Forgot to say, nice engine too    Those decals never seem to survive firing very well compared to other types.

I think in part it's due to being in the heat zone, and if you look at the discolouration where the decal is lifting as opposed to above it where paint has lifted, it seems the decal seperates in a layer.

odd. i just noticed that the remnants of my decal seem to be in the same location on the firebox as the 1958 version, but the boiler band is from the later 1965 model...

..also the con rod on mine is similar to the '58 version...

..mm i wonder if i've got a mish mash of parts here ?

Your correct its no later than 1965 as with the nut&bolt construction on the engine frame, very superb engine by the way

Need some decal help....

Have got so far with the minor restore (more of  clean really) of my recently acquired SE1.

Before..


..so far..



Now earlier posts seem to concur this beastie is from around 1965.

Now the nuked decal that I removed was the larger rectangular one, but... the decal on the 1965 model on TSB (#433) is the smaller one with the cut corners.  

Now the 1958 model (#440) is more like mine in almost all aspects other than the boiler strap - I have the flat steel strap.  my con rod is the same as the '58 model too.

So should this have the lower decal or the upper one ??

As I said before I am wondering if I have got a hybrid of parts from different model SE1s cobbled together by a previous owner.

What would you do ?

Keen to hear the thoughts of our Mamod SME's.

(FYI .. used VHT Black Gloss caliper paint on the firebox - 3 coats, then baked at 100C for 1 hour - a stellar finish - picture doesn't do it justice)

Hey that's an awesome job, well done.

I am 99.9% sure the larger decal would be the correct one. Your SE1 is right on the upper limit of the large decals, nut and bolt fixings, and also possibly for the one armed filler plug. The raised endcaps, crank and wider boiler strap are the beginning of the next period.

Briefly and approx,

Large decal was 57 to 65. 65 also had the introduction of the cut edge decal. In fact your engine is a good example of Mamod using left over bits. Sorta like they had designed the newer parts but found leftovers tucked away while assembling the newer models. It's not uncommon. Much like TE1a's having TE1 smokeboxes, and I have 2 example of 2 post war engines with pre war decals.

440 in the TSB has the wick burner so a different base to yours and possibly a flat ended cylinder. It would also probably have flat ended boiler caps. It also appears to have the thicker rimmed flywheel.

Given all that and yours has the larger opening in the firebox I would go with the large decal.

p.s  am thinking this wont be the last engine i'll be 'doing up', i can't remember the last time i had such an industrious weekend and actually enjoyed it !

Ok, she's done..

Compared with what it looked like off the plane, not a bad job I think for a first shot at all this...  

...I did create one minor paint drip on the firebox front by being a little over zealous, but other than that I am happy with the way it turn out.

Thanks to flywheel61 for the decals too BTW !
