I cant wait to see what you do with it. I do believe that the Mamod and the Wilesco capture two different varieties of Toy Steam, I am anxious to read your review of the Piston Valve engine too _________________ Non Impedite Raditioni Cogitationis |

Well I fired it up and gave it a go. Here is my product report.
Overall it is a well built engine. The flywheel is larger than on the oscilating engine in fact it is the same as used for the front wheel.
The engine proper beeing a valve design is monstorously powerfull for this size of model, just too much power. After getting up steam and turning over the flywheel a bunch of times to sneeze out the couagulated steam oil, it took off and is a very smooth runner. I let it go for a run on the floor at less than less than half throttle and it did almost a scale 100mph. The drive band slipped often on the flywheel. The throttle on this one does not shut off the steam compleatly as the engine runs at a fair speed in the full off position.
Like any other overgrown kid I had to take it apart. The actual engine assembly is VERY well made. It is assembled from three sections that all sandwich together on four rod bolts fastened by four nuts and washers. Disasembly was very easy and straightforward. The conecting rods remove with a single screw each.
The exhaust port is located on the bottom of the valve block and can be drilled out to accept a copper pipe for exhaust to the smoke box.
I think the actual engine itself could easilybe used on a model twice that size. The only big complaint is the same for other Mamod TE's, Noe gear drive, no chain steering,
This will be a bit of a challenge to see what I can do with it. _________________ Kevin Klein |

Kevin,
The new engine looks nice! The engine looks stout!
Few questions if you don't mind...
1. Are there any "bearings" on the flywheel axle...or same old metal hole that wobbles out?
2.Is there a proper (sealing) gland on the valve and piston rod?...
Thanks

This is a dilemma that has haunted man for ages. Does anyone hear us when we pray? Does Mamod pay attention to what happens to its engines? _________________ Wasserstand beachten |
