Hi,
Right place, right time, Me. Wrong place, wrong time SWMBO. Having spent the last two days playing trains at the CMES annual Rally I was walking out to my car when a guy was passed holding a small very mucky steam engine. On asking where it was going I was told the clubs bring and buy table. I bought it!
Video of it as bought running on air.
Regards Tony. |

Very cool. Looks like it was designed to do something purposeful, maybe sewing machine or something. Or maybe someone found a box of cogs and had some fun. _________________ Classic Hobbies

Hi,
Yes, it is an interesting engine but it is a bit BSA in the materials department possibly made during WWII. I haven't had time to get a good look at the engine as we have guests staying and I have to prepare my model railway layout for an exhibition at the Hereford MES the weekend after next 22/24th June. If anyone would like to come along and play with '0' gauge steam locomotives they would be more than welcome or bring your own!
Back to the engine I don't know its bore or stroke yet but it has a Scotch crank, slip eccentric reverse working a slide valve, it has a lubricator and powers a water feed pump, it has two 'V' pulleys at right angle to each other as power take off's.
I will report more when I start work on it. I have a Mamod boiler which I am begining to think I shouldn't have started on to repair first.
Regards Tony. |

Hi,
The first three photographs show the ‘Odd Engine’ as bought in the boot (trunk) of our car. A start has been made on the engine it will be taken apart and cleaned in stages. This will be done, as it is hand made using possibly a limited amount of tools so a lot of similar looking parts will only fit in one place especially screws. The materials used are definitely BSA a lot of copper and aluminium parts being recycled. The gears are Meccano.
The first stage consisted of removing the engine, its counter shafts and pump from the wooden base. The wooden base is made from recycled timber possibly Obeche as are two of the bracket supports. The third support for the pump is made from two pieces of Mahogany glued together.
Most of the wood screws securing the parts of the engine to the wood were rusted solid. Often trying to remove these screws causes then to break, OK if the wood isn’t going to be reused. But if the wood is to be used removing these broken threads can be a problem. A way of minimising this breaking is to heat the end of an old screw driver red hot and place it in the slot of the screw this done several times mostly will release the screw. The slightly burnt hole left will need to be plugged before the fitting of a new screw. Using this method all the screws were removed from the wood. This done plugs were glued in the screw holes another holes used in a previous use of the wood.. Three sides of the base were fairly square but one was very ragged so was trued up in the lathe. After sanding the wooden parts were painted with clear vanish. The paint was stripped from the pump and it was repainted and assembled using new balls as valves. The gear wheels and their shafts were cleaned up and their securing screws oil blackened. The parts so far clean were then assembled back on to the baseboard. This is as far as I have got.
