I'm in it for the long haul, I've had a lot of pastimes, but nothing as engrossing nor all encompassing as this. I can't see myself getting out of this hobby whilst I still have my faculties.

But then, did I lose my faculties getting into the steam hobby

Well, they say 'the proof is in the pudding', and I've been a member here for more than 10 years, so I'm in it for the long haul.

When the time comes to be sent up the chimney in smoke, I hope they use all of my metho burners, to save on gas,

Cheers

The steam bug bit me when i was but a wee demon of 9 years of age when i was given a new MM2 for Christmas in 1964.
So my commitment to the hobby is now 100 %

Yep, lifelong for me.
Like you Jim, I have had plenty of pastime/hobbies but nothing has stayed with me like this one (recently hit 11 years).

Certain aspects of the hobby for me have changed over that time. Losing interest in some parts whilst gaining interest in other areas - for different reasons.

But most of all the fun of grabbing an engine and steaming it up is still as strong/even grown, since my first day

For me, this hobby is for life . It does not mean I shall have no other interests though, besides, The social aspect of the hobby has proven to be the greatest surprise of the forum here. That people can travel from Australia and the US to England for a few hours (relatively speaking) meeting up. That is something I could never have imagine, coming into this forum 5 years ago.
So I dont "have" to run any engines for hours a day like I used to but I cant go for long without having contact with the forum here and the people i have made friends with.

I'm committed! Although I have sort of drifted in and out of buying and steaming engines over the last 11 years, I will always be a collector and the love for Mamods and steam is always there!

I shall keep on running engines for as long as I can. Fire, oil, water and steam associated with a pastime, are the magic ingredients of eternal childhood.

It's been over fifty years for me and I don't think I'll change now. I understand steam but I don't understand modern technology.

Steam locomotives had a profound effect on me in my youth, and still do, but since then have immersed myself in all other forms of steam power. My activity in the hobby may wax and wane, or ebb and flow to varying degrees of specific engine type enthusiasm, but I do not see myself ever losing all enthusiasm for the nearly infinite varieties of steam power available to delve into! I know I've virtually always been interested in steam, and so can only assume that I always will be ... I hope so anyway, as it is truly fascinating!!!

One of the advantages of this hobby is the possibililty of individual or group practice and sharing. I can always enjoy running an engine by myself or with hobby mates, and that is priceless. It is also not weather/seas/seasonal dependent like my fishing hobby   and I can run my engine indoor or outdoor   the hobby also gives me the oportunity to experiment using new preservation/restoration techniques and materials. The engines/models show/fairs are also a great venues to meet and share the hobby.
