While cars are becoming more capable of traveling quickly it is becoming more difficult and the penalties are becoming more punative.  In the good old days what was the maxinmum speed you drove ona UK road?

About 30 years ago I tried out my newly bought Reliant Scimitar on a quiet stretch of the A69, it was still accelerating at an indicated 115 mph but I later found out the speedo was under reading by about 12% , so probably nearer 130.  Not bad for a car that was 16 years old when I got it.
Of course I am older and wiser now, don't do that no more

Dave

Thanks Dave for the response; yes I'm much the same now, slower but mainly because it's too busy and the penalties are too high.

Phil, did wonder if that would be a problem but I think the survey is anonymous and in any event the offence, if you want to call it that, is historic.

I entered 150+ as even though I have never been to the UK I would guess that some of my internet connection with members there have traveled along communications lines adjacent to the roads in the UK, and thus "I've" traveled along them at something near the speed of light!

Coming from this side of the pond I am not sure you want me driving at any speed on the wrong side of the road over there.

I'm not going to put the figure in a public forum post but I have travelled at a whole-number multiple of the legal speed limit on the M54, some years back.

Dead of night, zero traffic (other than myself) and between junctions so no possibility of someone joining. I would not do it again, definitely a 1-off. I did it for seconds, on a motorbike, then rolled the trottle shut and sat upright. The speedo plumetted rapidly due to wind-resistance braking (human parachute effect).

Hello Phil It surprised me at the time i knew they were good for it..a nice ‎1,998 cc straight-6 engine, twin carbs they were a very fast car for their time, but it was a Leyland  and as with the Triumph stag poor quality steel was used in the crankshafts in some vehicles but not all..it was the down fall of many.
I did repair the car but never repeated the speed again in fact not in any car since ...Steve

Well it should not do any harm as there is no video evidence.  On 2 wheels in excess of 152 mph (speedo was maxed out!) and 4 wheels just over 140 in a merc.
