I finally took the plunge (after over 50 years of thinking about it - time flies) and won an auction on ebay for a fairly modern Mamod TE1A Traction Engine. It arrived yesterday and the work starts now. Having retired from (paid) work and with most of the home diy finished, I decided that I would venture into fettling & polishing a steam engine. I wanted one that was complete, didn't need much work to get running and only required painting & polishing to appear presentable. So here I am, eager to learn the necessary skills to get this engine painted and working.
First question is - how do I find out when it was made, as there are no serial or model nos. on it?
I am looking forward to finding out all sorts of stuff on this Forum and reading other Members' contributions.

Welcome from another new member.  Actually your post sounds pretty much the same as mine did, in my mind before I wrote it!

You'll get loads of advice here.  I recently got an unloved engine, managed to resolder a busted pipe and surprised myself just how good it looks after a tidy, and bit of respray.

Enjoy.

Thanks for your tip, Roly. I have just taken some photos of my engine. Is it PC to call it an engine? I may not have to post them, if I can get a manufacturing year/decade/century from your link.
Thanks for your welcome, Tulipone. I had a friend, at junior school, who had a TE1(?) for Christmas - wow. I watched him steaming it (a meths burner, in those days, I imagine) and I promised myself, that one day, I would own one. Well, over 50 years later, my promise became reality.

Hi Roly - I read the article regarding dating a TE1(A) and I have reached the conclusion that mine is 1978 to 1982 - boiler sight glass, solid fuel tray and screw through canopy into chimney. Thanks - that has put my mind at rest. No need to post any photos.

OK, I will post them in a bit - have to reduce the size and mess about, as technology and I do not get along at all well.
