The myth, the legend, the engine that apparently does exist.

There has been, and still is a lot of debate whether this engine does or does not exist, is it a legend, fable or a story tale?

Well with the help of Will (made-in-england) who put me on to a Gumtree sale in Torquay and even more help from John Besley who lives in Paignton who sealed the deal when the seller twice declined to post it, after a frantic week of will I get it, has it been sold, will she change her mind and not sell, till it actually turned up on my doorstep I was very nervous.

Once I had it here and thoroughly inspected it, and then meeting Phil (MrMamod) the following day who had a sneak preview of it and he also confirmed it authenticity. Although Phil seemed very nervous of handling it for some reason he did begrudgingly give it back afterwards.

It is not an old engine, it was made in 1999, the engine itself is very common but what it has with it makes it unique.

It is the only one I have seen on the forum although there are pictures on the web saying it existed. I was beginning to doubt if there were any around as none have ever surfaced before.

Not only do I have a unique engine, having it gives me a complete set, something I thought I would never have.

To say I am pleased is an understatement; I am overjoyed to be able to have what could possibly be one of a very small number that were manufactured.

It has been confirmed by Mamod that less than 20 were made.

Therefore I present to your possibly the one and only 100% original on the forum as I haven't seen any others Mamod SP4D.

Yes I have typed it right, it is a genuine Mamod SP4D, manufactured in 1999 and only fired once as there are only two fuel pellets missing from the box.

It still has the warning tag attached along with the original oil, funnel and leaflets.

It also came with a spare safety valve which dates the purchase date to 4th November 1999, two months after the SP4D was manufactured.

Well well well. It certainly looks like the real thing!

BTW, that's the first I've seen with a yellow handled burner!

Nice find.
Yes I do remember the debate on whether or not this engine was actually made, guess the issue is finally settled now.
Congratulations

Hello Roly,

My Mamod SP2D has a yellow handled burner and a yellow funnel.

Thank you, it doesn't have a reverse lever as the dynamo it meant to run one way only as far as I know.

Thank you, it has taken 8 years to find but it certainly was worth the wait.

Yes Phil, that is the complete set of SP engines, a total of 11, thank you for the coffee and the excellent company and for letting me have my engine back.

Strange That would imply that it was originally fitted with an LED rather than the filament bulb it has now.

The SP2D (2000) and the SP5D (2002) don't have reverse levers and they have filament bulbs.

Hmm. There must be a reason. Dynamos will work equally well in both directions.

Nice addition Les, well done.

So is that the one from the other thread? http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org/ftopic92387-15.php

Or is it a case of that is 2 that we know of in existence?
